Norbert de Varenne from Bel Ami

Norbert de Varenne is one of the side characters from the French novel Bel Ami and I've been wanting to find out what happens to him by the end of the story because some website say he succumbed to fate while other websites say he lives but I don't know which ones are true or fake. It,s been years since I've read the book, but I don't recall that anything is said about what happens to him later in life. Here's an article (in French) about the character. It does not mention what happens to him, which meshes with my recollection. The text of the novel is available on wikisource. He's still alive the last two times he is mentioned in the final chapter.
