Suspected sockpuppets

Sockmaster has already been blocked for 1 week for sockpuppetry by a CheckUser. The sock then was User:Al Gomez. Both Al Gomez and Alice Shedrack voted to kep the article Azubuike Wokocha at its AfD. An account was created today (Thirdstrike11) which added another vote to the discussion along the same lines as Alice Shedrack's. It looks very sketchy, but not enough to be ducky. Requesting CU to confirm as the user edited unrelated pages before participating in the AfD. Michaelzeng7 (talk) 19:49, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected sockpuppets

Account created today adding a keep !vote to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Azubuike Wokocha, where a bunch of other Stanleytux socks also made keep votes. Follows similar editing patterns: make copyedits to a few music-related articles than adding a keep argument to the AfD. I've requested CheckUser because the account made several unrelated edits before the AfD, but that's in accordance with the pattern, and it does look slightly ducky. I'm not savvy to this process, please let me know if I am not doing this right. However, at this AfD a user with a previous investigation is being accused of continued sockpuppetry. From what I read at the previous investigation, the user agreed to repeated checkusers. I suspect this would be a good time to do it. From his editing and article creation behaviour, I believe he's a paid editor who really isn't here to help create an encyclopedia. Ifnord (talk) 22:26, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • The "agreement" was reached almost four years ago. Since that time, there have been no checks of Stanleytux, meaning in practice the agreement was never actually implemented. I know I don't feel comfortable running a check now based on nothing but that agreement. There's also been no evidence presented against Darreg. See Special:Undelete/Sam Saleh for a trove of likely socks. Siavash1398 uploaded the same image as Alijelodar on Commons, and Sina1397 is confirmed as a sock of Siavash. Mrasoolniya created the same draft as Sina1397. Alisalahedin has the same style and same article.

I’m opening this SPI with the hope the duck test would prove imperative as the behavioral evidence is overwhelming. To understand this SPI, some background information is needed. Port Harcourt is the capital of Rivers state in Nigeria. Now to the crux, the suspected sock master Stanleytux was obsessed with Rivers state see this, this & this, Infact see all articles created by them here, do you note their obsession with Rivers state & Port Harcourt? Now see this. Furthermore on the Userpage of the suspected sock they expressly declare their love for Zee World, this isn’t unusual but this is where it gets interesting, optimizing the Editor Interaction Analyser Take a look at this and we find that the first thing that pops up is Zee World,and we observe both editors edit in similar Rivers state - Port harcout topic areas see this, this (an article on a Nigerian singer from PortHarcourt) and of course it’s no surprise that both are editing this article That isn’t all, furthermore using the same aforementioned tool, we observe that they are both editing the article titled Mr 2Kay (yet another artist from Rivers state). They also edit this article Peter Odili, a former governor of Rivers state. They edit this & this also which all pertain to Rivers State, Nigeria. I’m unsure if or not Check user can work here but the behavioral evidence is overwhelming. Furthermore in December 2018 when Stanleytux was blocked see here take a look at this statement they made when appealing “feel free to nominate any of the articles if you feel they don't meet our notability threshold” now juxtapose with the comment the suspected sock makes here “if you feel it doesn't meet GNG and it is WP:TOOSOON, please AFD is not far from your reach”, do you note the eerie similarity in their “Tone” see the entire entry Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard#Allegations of editing like a UPE where they were unhappy the NPR perm wasn’t granted to them by Rosguill & the declining reason was their edits were consistent with probable undisclosed paid editing pattern in which MER-C also stated that they weren’t comfortable with Idoghor Melody possessing the perm and yes both MER-C & Rosguill are correct and their cause for concern very valid. You see, the suspected sock @Idoghor Melody was a WP:SLEEPER account until recently when they resumed editing, note that they have been here for 6 years this is a major red flag. The suspected master sock Stanleytux was an undisclosed paid editor who initially lied about it and later confessed to UPE. I believe the behavioral pattern, choice of topic areas, their tone all point to them being one and the same. I believe this to be sock puppetry or in the very least a coordinated off wiki collaboration, in the words of JBW whilst addressing a different sock they made this comment; “everyone habitually does little things that are so natural to them that they don't realise how distinctive they are, and by studying an editor's editing history very carefully it is possible to find those things & I feel this is one of such cases. Fun fact: I know Port Harcourt a bit, I spent some time working there in the early 00s. I have fond memories of sitting in a bar near the harbour drinking STAR Lager, and if I searched for long enough I expect I could dig out the swimming certificate that I needed to work on the job, and which I had to earn by going through underwater obstacles in the pool at The Shell Club there. Seems like a lifetime ago...
Anyway, back to business. Thanks to Rosguill for forwarding their thoughts, and to Celestina007 for outlining their concerns. However, I'm not persuaded by the evidence available that there is a link between these accounts. At first I thought it was odd that Idoghor Melody had contacted Celestina007 on their talk page with their third edit; however, looking at the early history of Idoghor Melody's talk page, and at their deleted contributions, I see that IM had created a self-promotional article, which Celestina007 moved it into draft space prior to that interaction (see this diff), so I can understand why IM might have reached out to C007 for advice a couple of weeks later.
Looking more broadly at IM's contributions, I don't see much of a pattern between him and the socks in the report. Yes, there is some overlap in interest with regards to the Rivers State governance, media and music, but on its own that's not really evidence of socking - two people coming from that part of the world might easily share such interests. What I'm not seeing is evidence of them adding/removing the same content to any of the articles mentioned, or anything else that makes me think that they are the same person; in fact, I see quite a few differences between IM's editing style and that of the proposed sockmaster. What I see is an editor who, in his early days, tried to promote himself, but who didn't persist with those ambitions once it became clear that it wouldn't work, and started working in other areas. I'm therefore closing this without any further action; naturally, if any more specific evidence comes to light, please re-open and we can take another look. Already blocked: CU match with User:Rexchuqa. I would like another CU to have a look: there's two or three dozen IPs from at least two ranges that are already blocked for proxy concerns. I have NOT checked those ranges for other socks, since I was running out of time and frankly they are a bit too big for my thinking window.
