The United States Constituion embodies that all men are created equal. The concept that this refers to has embodied all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation. The process is ever evolving. The Power and Control wheel needs to reflect the fact that both men, and women, use power, and control, to manipulate their partner, regardless of their partner's sex. Whether it is heterosexual, homosexual, or lesbian, the fact is, their are those that use various means to achieve various results. Some are violent, some are not. By no means am I condoning this behavior but am expressing the absolute need to retain the Power and Control wheel to help all of use better understand what constitutes power and control against both the sexes by either opposite gender partners or same sex partners.
The Power and Control wheel should stay for both men and women. If the wheel only described what a woman could receive abuse by a man, then that is incomplete. Likewise, if it described only what a man could receive abuse from a woman, that too is incomplete. Homosexual men, and Lesbian women, are also capable, and statistically proven, to be perpetrators of abuse. Not taking a stand on whether those lifestyles are acceptable or not, that is not the point. The point is, the Power and Control wheel should remain to help all those that are affected by domestic violence.
The United States Congress has reflected this by enacting changes in the Violence Against Women's Act to encompass and protect men, as well. Men are at risk of being abused by women, and, other male partners. The same is true for women, and their male partners, or female partners.
I think that the Power and Control definitions should stay. Maybe, they need tweaking, but the fact that they describe what happens to both men and women, is helpful and a necessary resource to understand the dynamics affecting both men and women.
How can we erase discrimination if all we define by two colors, black and white? We can't. Discrimination is a broad spectrum of behaviors, attitudes and concept that affects not only African Americans, and minorities, but other people as well, including those of the Jewish faith, Muslim faith and many many other minorities in the melting pot we call the United States. In the 1940's, it was the Japanese directly after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Directly after 9-11 hate crimes began happening against Muslims, all because certain people thought that all muslims are terrorists. Even the United States government persecuted some of these people!
The point is simply that we need the Power and Control wheel to better understand the dynamics of domestic abuse, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, and sexual orientation.
Please do not delete the Power and Control wheel.
Thank you!
