Is it time for the Signpost to switch to Bluesky?
With Twitter / X becoming more of a safe haven for anti-democratic authoritarianism, is it time for the Signpost to make the switch to Bluesky? That is, after Twitter blocked opposition figures in Turkey, purging of leftists and journalists, and honoured 83% of censorship requests from authoritarian countries, etc (see Twitter under Elon Musk). I don't think the website is still mission-aligned.. —Femke 🐦 (talk) 07:24, 29 March 2025 (UTC)
- I agree about exiting Twitter but surely more mission-aligned to settle on fediverse locations (Mastodon, from where the feed can be bridged to Bluesky if people want)? AllyD (talk) 08:12, 29 March 2025 (UTC)
- That looks like an option too. I must admit I don't quite understand the fediverse, but Bluesky seems to be working on interoperability with other networks? From a practical perspective, Bluesky seems about twice the size of Mastodon. If we gauge the interest in Wikipedia on both platforms by followers of the Wikipedia account, mastodon has 30k, whereas Bluesky has around 43k. —Femke 🐦 (talk) 08:35, 29 March 2025 (UTC)
- Bluesky clearly has higher user numbers (and a momentum of people moving from Xitter). Another consideration is structural: is a US VC-backed corporation is the most durable target right now? AllyD (talk) 09:25, 29 March 2025 (UTC)
- Related: meta:Microblogging handles (which lists Mastodon and Twitter handles for Signpost). The follower stats need updating though. ClaudineChionh (she/her · talk · contribs · email · global) 09:34, 29 March 2025 (UTC)
- A bot can easily cross post to all of these platforms. If we wanted to interact with subscribers that’s a different story but that doesn’t happen anyways. Twitter has by far more journalists following so as much as I dislike their values, I see value in promoting Wikipedia, or as they know it as Dickipedia. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 09:35, 29 March 2025 (UTC)
- Pinging User:HaeB, who seems to manage the social media account (if you'd not seen the discussion yet). The foundation left Twitter last February, btw. How many journalists follow the Signpost? Do we get a lot of interactions from them? And is that worth it? —Femke 🐦 (talk) 15:40, 31 March 2025 (UTC)
- I would be quite happy to see BlueSky added (which I coincidentally joined today). I'd rather we didn't boycott anything. More access (and hence more routes) to well-sourced information, not less, is needed. All the best: Rich Farmbrough 22:51, 14 May 2025 (UTC).
- All journalists are also on BlueSky these days. It is not like they can afford to miss out. Polygnotus (talk) 04:54, 15 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Femke: Any update on the move? See we are still active on X but not bsky. Gotitbro (talk) 19:33, 26 June 2025 (UTC)
