Saint Anne's Church is in San Damiano, a hamlet of Brugherio, in the Province of Monza and Brianza.

History
The church, known as "geseta de Sant'Anna",[1] is located on the site of the ninth century church dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian and attached to a monastery.[2][3] During his pastoral visit in 1578 Saint Charles Borromeo decided to demolish the building. In the eighteenth century it was built the new church: a private chapel adjacent to the Villa Viganoni-Benavides, the summer residence of the family Parravicini in the nineteenth century and now demolished. The church was dedicated to Saint Anne probably by Antonio Parravicini and his wife Isabella Blasi.[4] They placed the marble altar painting of the Education of the Virgin that came from another church in Milan. In 1808 Isabella Blasi put the at the sides of the altar two plaques of black marble. The first presents a petition to Saint Anne recommending father Blasio,[5] the second is a memorial plaque for the death of her husband and father.[6]
Architecture and arts
The nave is covered by a barrel vault and separated from the presbytery by a depressed arch with Jesus's monogram in the center, and floral motifs at the sides. The left aisle leads to the sacristy, used as a women's gallery in the past and accessible directly from the Villa. After some restoration, there were found five niches with murals of faux marble friezes and with archways decorated with golden stars. These niches contain two wooden statues of the Virgin and Child and St. Joseph, a crown and a scepter with the palms of martyrdom in reference to saints and martyrs. There are also paintings depicting the Stations of the Cross and two paintings of the Madonna, St. Anne and St. Joachim on the right and the Saints Cosmas and Damian on the left. The restoration of the main door, windows and furniture was carried out under the protection of Belle Arti.
La pianta della chiesa è caratterizzata da una navata principale, coperta da una volta a botte, distaccata dal presbiterio tramite un arco a sesto ribassato decorato con motivi floreali, al centro del quale è raffigurato il monogramma di Gesù[2]. A sinistra, una navata amplia la pianta conducendo alla sagrestia, spazio dedicato, in passato, al matroneo (dove si raccoglievano in preghiera le nobildonne) raggiungibile direttamente dalla villa. In seguito ad alcuni interventi di restauro all'interno della chiesa, sono state riportate in luce cinque nicchie ornate con decorazioni pittoriche "a fresco", raffiguranti finti marmi e fregi architettonici, che sembrano trasformarle in veri e propri altari[7], dedicati alle figure che queste ospitavano. Due nicchie, poste una di fronte all'altra, contengono le statue lignee raffiguranti la Vergine con il bambino e San Giuseppe. Altre due nicchie sono ornate da una corona con uno scettro a destra, e le palme del martirio a sinistra, quindi erano dedicate ad altri santi e martiri. Ciascuna nicchia presenta al suo interno una volta celeste decorata da stelle dorate. Sono presenti inoltre i dipinti raffiguranti la Via Crucis e due tele che rappresentano la Madonna, sant'Anna e san Gioacchino a destra e i santi Cosma e Damiano a sinistra. Sotto la tutela delle Belle Arti sono stati eseguiti interventi di restauro che hanno interessato il portone principale, riportandolo all'attuale splendore[8]; il recupero delle porte, delle finestre e degli elementi d'arredo quali panche e un armadio posto nella sacrestia[8].
