Wikipedia:1911 Encyclopedia topics

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Siva1979 (talk | contribs) at 06:20, 4 February 2006. The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

This a list of topics from the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica which do not have articles on Wikipedia.

A complete ocr version is available here (Google searching the site is often more productive). There is another version here, which is more accurate but has problems with some browsers. Comparing them can help decipher garbled text. Being ocr, there are a lot of spelling errors etc., so do not copy and paste any text from this to Wikipedia without checking it thoroughly. Also remember that information in the EB 1911 is out of date, so may be wrong, especially on scientific topics and cities. Many city articles already exist in Wikipedia, but are under different or accented names. The current names with proper accents can be found by searching Wikipedia and Google.

An easier resource for terms at the beginning of the alphabet involves going to PGDP, choosing a volume, going to the volume's "project comments", then choosing "Images, Pages Proofread, & Differences". Click on the various text links in the rightmost column (all labelled by file size), and find the term you're looking for. This text has been thoroughly proofread and can simply be copy-and-pasted. There is no need to delete the newlines or html code, Wikipedia will convert them properly automatically. This is most easily done using tabbed browsing, so that you don't have to go back and forth between the long list of entries.

Always add the {{1911}} tag to articles that contain text copied from the 1911 encyclopædia.

(96.9%) complete 452 topics remain of the 14,707 starting topics

If assuming 40,000 original articles, 98.9% complete.

These are Law terms and odd or obsolete stuff. Some probably have existing equivalents, but they are not likely to be a direct transfer. Some of the info in these articles may be useful and partial merges may be possible. Then again, some may be here wrongly and be perfectly transferable. Just trying to get a focus on stuff that looks like it's being ignored. If something looks like it can't be transferred as-is, it can be moved to page 16, which is for articles under consideration for non-inclusion (there it will get more focused attention).

Non-inclusion

These articles are "under consideration" for non-inclusion, but anyone is free at anytime to do the articles if they want. This page is for material that is hoplessly dated or redundant, yet may still have some relevance or be of historical interest.

For now, these should be used in calculating the % complete.

In many of these the application of heat is necessary to bring the substances used into the liquid state for the purpose of electrolysis, aqueous solutions being unsuitable."
An article should be written on the subject, it's how some metals like aluminum are purified from ore, but the Britannica article appears to be out of date. -- Kjkolb 22:51, 9 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Electrotherapeutics – on jrank site; first sentence: "ELECTROTHERAPEUTICS, a general term for the use of electricity in therapeutics, i.e. in the alleviation and cure of disease."
