Change to translatewiki.net/Miraheze-Meta page translation target languages

edit

Currently, the page translation target language configuration on Wikimedia Meta-Wiki were inherited from the "language converter page translation model".

However, this actually created several problems including the broken page transclutions with malfunctioned language converter tags exposed and using the workaround of Template:Conversion-zh, Template:LC zh. More breakages could be found on phab:T328838.

I would like to propose to use the "translatewiki.net page translation model"/"Miraheze Meta page translation model" instead on Meta-Wiki after the related proposal had been discussed, supported and approved and changes had been done on Wikifunctions.

Below are examples of the proposed translation model.

More briefly for the zh part: The old configuration can only translate into zh while the new configuration can translate into zh-hans (for zh-Hans-CN, zh-Hans-MY, zh-Hans-SG), zh-hant (for zh-Hant-TW) and zh-hk (for zh-Hant-HK, zh-Hant-MO).

Without using /zh-hans, /zh-hant, /zh-hk, we have to pass the language tag every time using message bundle messages.

-- Wrapping all of them under /zh using {{LC zh|, without using /zh-hans, /zh-hant, /zh-hk
tmb.new( mb_page_title, lang_tag ):t( message_key ):params( lang_tag ):plain()
-- Using separated /zh-hans, /zh-hant, /zh-hk, we no longer need to pass the language tag :params( lang_tag ) every time
tmb.new( mb_page_title, lang_tag ):t( message_key ):plain()

With this change, every Lua module using translation bundles can be simplified:

- :t( message_key ):params( lang_tag ):plain()
+ :t( message_key ):plain()

Without this change, every Lua module using translation bundles need to:

- :t( message_key ):plain()
+ :t( message_key ):params( lang_tag ):plain()

Note: "translatewiki.net page translation model"/"Miraheze Meta page translation model" refer to the same translation model.

As I didn't look into two models, is there any major difference? If yes, would you briefly describe the difference please? Hamish 16:02, 5 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

New AbuseFilter: Disallow RFAs by inexperienced users

edit

Although uncommon, misbegotten RfAs tend to come from users with less than 3,000 global edits. This would deter hat-collectors. The AbuseFilter message should be:

Thank you for your willingness to serve as an administrator on Meta. However, you appear to not have sufficient experience. Please note that ill-considered nominations can be draining and deflating for both you and the community. Please read Meta:Administrators for more information.

Please come back when you have obtained more cross-wiki experience and have actually demonstrated a need for the rights.

Specifically, this filter would target people who meet all of the following criteria:

  • The user is creating an RfA subpage with their username
  • The user has less than 3,000 global edits.

I don't know how this would deal with users who start editing at veteran-adjacent capacities.

I wonder if we can do something similar for other global permission requests. Faster than Thunder (talk) 15:56, 30 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

The number of test RfPs is quite low, compared to other kinds of test edits. Not to mention, there are legitimate reasons for an account with few edits to create such requests, such as WMF/affiliate employees and alternative accounts of otherwise established users.
@Faster than Thunder: Please always think things through before making a request.

I understand where you are coming from. Faster than Thunder (talk) 17:43, 30 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
If you want to change the administrator policy, start an RFC. We shouldn't create an abuse filter that prevents things allowed by policy. — xaosflux Talk 16:31, 30 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Abuse filter messages that catch likely test edits should point users to the sandbox

edit

MediaWiki:Abusefilter-warning should say:

Meta does get quite a number of test edits per day. By AGF, these users should be directed to test in the sandbox. It's likely that they do not know that there is a place where they can make test edits. Faster than Thunder (talk) 14:21, 3 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Faster than Thunder: Feel free to post an {{edit request}} on the talk page of the notice if you think it can be improved. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 18:41, 3 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the advice. Wikis directing users to correct venues for various cases would go a long way. Faster than Thunder (talk) 19:29, 3 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

About Template:Visibility

edit

I believe this template was copy-pasted from Wikipedia which left multiple red links behind. I've restored the old links but I believe they should be updated to link to Meta wiki policies and talk pages instead of the ones on Wikipedia. I'm not really sure. It's moon (talk) 17:08, 6 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

@It's moon: It's fine for some of the links to lead to pages on Wikipedia and mediawikiwiki; Meta doesn't have many help pages and policies, and those that exist aren't as detailed as those on the aforementioned projects. However, the help desk and village pump links should point to this page (Meta:Babel) instead. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 19:04, 6 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
  Done. It's moon (talk) 15:50, 8 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Should we use Wikipedia's category explanation (1, 2) for these two categories? It's moon (talk) 17:21, 6 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

I'm having trouble understanding the sentence, so I'd appreciate it if you could lend a hand.

Hello. What does the statement on the Translation Administrator page mean: “Before applying for translation administrator privileges, please practice the correct usage of translation syntax. When applying for translation administrator privileges, please attach an editing sample demonstrating practical experience using translation syntax”? I would appreciate a detailed explanation. Thank you in advance. ℍ𝕕𝕚𝕒𝕝𝕜 (𝕥𝕒𝕝𝕜) 14:13, 15 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Help us decide the name of the new Abstract Wikipedia project

edit

Hello. Please help pick a name for the new Abstract Wikipedia wiki project. This project will be a wiki that will enable users to combine functions from Wikifunctions and data from Wikidata in order to generate natural language sentences in any supported languages. These sentences can then be used by any Wikipedia (or elsewhere).

There will be two rounds of voting, each followed by legal review of candidates, with votes beginning on 20 October and 17 November 2025. Our goal is to have a final project name selected on mid-December 2025. If you would like to participate, then please learn more and vote now at meta-wiki. Thank you!
