![]() | The following is a proposed Wikipedia policy, guideline, or process. The proposal may still be in development, under discussion, or in the process of gathering consensus for adoption. |
Wikipedia contains many good articles. However, only about 0.1% of our articles are featured articles, which have been thoroughly reviewed and designated as the very best of Wikipedia.
Many articles contain excellent content but are unlikely in their current state to become featured; they may be too short, or on too broad a topic, or on too specific a topic, or on a topic about which not much is known. We should endeavour to identify good content, which may have the potential to become featured after some development. 765 have so far been identified as meeting the good article criteria (with several going on to FAC status), but there are plenty more out there waiting to be listed.
- What makes a good article?
A good article will share many characteristics with featured articles, and like featured content it must:
- be well written
- be factually accurate
- use a neutral point of view
- be stable
- be referenced, and
- wherever possible, contain images to illustrate it. The images should all be appropriately tagged.
Good articles may not be as thorough and detailed as our featured articles, but should not omit any major facets of the topic.
- How to list an article on 'good articles'
The process by which articles are designated as 'good' should be much simpler and quicker than that by which articles become featured. Simply add any articles here that match the criteria, and add {{GA}} to the top of the articles' talk pages. To avoid bias, don't do this if you have significantly contributed to the article yourself; use /Self-nominations instead.
Don't forget to remove articles from the list if they get promoted to featured status.
- What to do if you disagree with a listing
If you see an article listed here that you think is not good, be bold and try to improve it or remove it, leaving {{DelistedGA}} or {{DelistedGAbecause}} and a note on its talk page to indicate why you think it is not good. Please keep in mind, however, that "be bold" does not mean "be merciless": a good article is not the same as a featured one and the criteria are less strictly applied. A notice on the talk page with suggestions about improvements without delisting is preferable, unless you think that the article is really bad.
